A Student asked us this question. But this question is not of Student alone. This question comes in the mind of thousands of students preparing for Management after UG. Because usually when we talk about management, the first thing that comes to our mind is MBA (Master of Business Administration). But PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) is studied in top management colleges like IIM, XLRI and SP Jain etc. So if you also want to study management then understand the difference between MBA and PGDM.

Difference Between Degree (MBA) And Diploma (PGDM)

MBA courses are offered by universities or their affiliated colleges and after completion of studies, MBA degree is available in it. For example, FMS (Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi University) of Delhi University gives MBA degree. Whereas PGDM courses are offered by autonomous institutes and diploma certificates are available here. Because autonomous institutes do not have the right to award degrees. For example, till 2017 IIMs (Indian Institute of Management Studies) also used to give PGDM. IIM got the status of Institute of National Importance in 2017. After which the way was cleared for getting degree from here also. However, many IIMs still offer PGDM courses instead of MBA.

Syllabus Difference

It mostly happens that the university designs the college syllabus for MBA. For this reason, you can see the similarity in the syllabus of two colleges offering MBA. But the course and syllabus of PGDM is decided by each institute at its own level. That is, the institutes offering PGDM have the freedom to choose the syllabus.

For this reason people like PGDM more. Because there is flexibility in the course and syllabus can be changed every year according to the industry. But this does not mean that the syllabus of MBA is not better than that of PGDM. Both are made according to the demand of the industry.

Examination

The body that approves the examination in PGDM institutes is AICTE ie All India Council of Technical Education. Whereas in the institutes offering MBA, exams are conducted by the university.

Fee Structure

MBA fees are less as compared to PGDM. Due to the grant received by the UGC, the fees here are less. Whereas in PGDM courses the fees are high. Because these are offered by autonomous institutes.

One more thing on the go. Since 2017, some IIMs of the country have also started offering MBA degrees. Like- IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Indore, IIM Jammu. Whereas IIM Amritsar, IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Lucknow, IIM Nagpur offer PGDM course.
